How should an AI assistant hand a lead off to a salesperson?

Silently. The AI stops replying, the assigned rep gets alerted, and the customer sees nothing except a slightly slower next message that now comes from a person. If the AI has been texting under a rep's name, announcing the handoff makes the rep look like they are passing the customer to themselves.

Why does a verbal AI handoff break the conversation?

Because of who the customer thinks they are talking to. If bkd.ai's AI Sidekick has been texting as Mike from your store, and it then writes "let me connect you with Mike, he'll reach out shortly," the customer reads a message from Mike promising to hand them to Mike. It is the one line that makes the whole thread feel synthetic.

This is not a hypothetical risk, it is the default behaviour of every language model. They are trained to be helpful and polite, and a polite assistant announces what it is doing. Left to its own judgment, an AI will write the farewell every time.

Which is why bkd.ai does not leave it to the model's judgment. The outbound text is blanked at the send layer on any handoff attempt, below the AI entirely. There is no prompt to ignore and no wording to get wrong.

What should happen the moment a handoff fires?

Three things, in order. The AI stops replying to that conversation. The assigned rep gets alerted with the full thread so they can pick up mid-sentence. And the customer's next message stays on the same number, so nothing about their experience changes except who is typing.

The failure case is the one worth designing for. If the alert to the rep fails, and the AI has already sent a goodbye, the customer is now sitting in a conversation that nobody owns and nobody is watching. That is worse than never handing off at all.

bkd.ai is built for that case. The outbound message is suppressed on every handoff attempt whether the rep alert succeeded or not, and any failed handoff is logged loudly as "rep not alerted" so someone can act on it. The rule is simple. No goodbye reaches a customer unless there is a real person behind it.

How do you test AI handoff behaviour before it touches a real customer?

Run the conversation in a test pane and check what the customer would actually receive, not what the model wrote. Those are different things once suppression exists, and a test tool that shows you the raw draft is quietly lying to you about production.

bkd.ai's Test Drive shows the true state on a handoff turn: AI stood down, handed off silently. That is what your customer would receive, so what you tune in testing is what your store actually ships.

If you are evaluating any AI texting tool for your store, this is a good question to put to the vendor. Show me what the customer receives on a handoff, not what the model produced.

Frequently asked questions

Should an AI text assistant tell the customer it is handing them to a human?

No, when the AI has been texting under a salesperson's name. From the customer's side that reads as the rep handing them off to themselves, which is confusing and damages trust. The handoff should be silent: the AI stops replying and the assigned rep is alerted to take over.

What triggers an AI handoff to a salesperson?

In bkd.ai, a handoff fires when the customer asks for a human or a manager, raises a question outside the AI's scope, or shows buying intent that needs a person. The AI stands down, the assigned rep gets alerted, and the conversation stays on the same phone number.

What happens if the AI handoff fails behind the scenes?

bkd.ai blanks the outbound message on any handoff attempt, successful or not, so no farewell text reaches the customer without a real handoff behind it. A failed handoff is logged as an error stating the rep was not alerted, rather than passing silently.
