What should a car salesperson do first each morning?

Answer the customers who are already waiting, oldest message first. Unanswered texts and emails come before new leads, and both come before prospecting. Everything else in a rep's morning is assembly work, and assembly work is the part the software should be doing.

Why is the first hour of a sales day so hard to get right?

Because the work does not arrive in one place. Texts land in the messaging screen. New leads land in the lead queue. Calls due sit on a call list. Reminders the rep set for themselves are somewhere else again. Tasks, mentions from a manager, an appointment that nobody confirmed. That is ten directions before anyone has sold anything.

No dealership trains a rep to go collect all of that. They do it because nothing else will. And the collecting is invisible work, so it never shows up in a one-on-one and never gets fixed.

The reps who are good at it lose the front of the morning doing it properly. The reps who are not good at it skip the collecting and work whatever they happened to see first. Both outcomes are decided before a single customer is contacted.

What makes the morning list different from every other list?

It has to be complete before it can be sorted. There is no right order for a list that is missing half the work, and how a rep sorts their day is a live argument with good answers on several sides. The prior question is whether everything that needs them is even in one place to sort.

That is the part a rep cannot do well by hand. Sorting is judgment, and reps are good at it. Collecting is clerical, and it is where things get dropped, because a source you forgot to check looks exactly like a source with nothing in it.

Follow-up reminders are the clearest example. A reminder a rep set themselves is a commitment they made out loud to a customer, and it is also the item most likely to be stale, because nothing tells the rep that the customer already replied somewhere else in the meantime.

How does bkd.ai remove the assembly work?

bkd.ai's Your Day merges every source a rep's work arrives from into a single Needs you list, ordered by who is waiting longest and who is closest to leaving. The rep opens one screen and starts at the top instead of going looking.

It also clears itself honestly. When a customer replies on any thread, the reminder to chase them disappears, because the reason for it is gone. A contact that is already lost or already sold stops appearing in the follow-up list. A rep who cannot trust a list stops reading it, so the list has to be right more than it has to be long.

Sidekick's drafts sit in the same list. If bkd.ai has written a reply for a customer, it is waiting there to be read and approved, not buried in a different tab. And the choice sticks: a rep who moves to the new view stays there, and can switch back to the classic page whenever they want.

Frequently asked questions

What should a car salesperson do first each morning?

Answer the customers who are already waiting. Unanswered texts and emails come before new leads, and both come before prospecting. The oldest unanswered message is the one most likely to have already bought somewhere else, so it goes first.

Why do salespeople miss follow-ups they already scheduled?

Because the reminder lives in one screen and the customer's reply lives in another. A rep who answered a text yesterday still sees the reminder today, so reminders lose credibility fast and reps stop trusting the list entirely.

How long should a morning routine take at a dealership?

The routine itself should take no time. Any minutes spent assembling a to-do list are minutes not spent contacting customers. If a rep needs a quarter of an hour to work out what to do, the software is handing them a research project instead of a day.
